Roger Federer plays and loses one of the worst matches of his amazing career against the world no.55 John Millman in the 4th round of the US Open.
What happened to Federer?
Roger was widely expected to have a routine win against Millman and everything was pointing to that after he was leading before 6-3 5-3 and then 6-3 5-4 40-15. However, things got mysteriously south soon after when the Swiss Maestro failed to convert these set points. Eventually, Federer lost 5 consecutive games to be 6-3 5-7 0-1 down.
The world no.2 became extremely shaky and lethargic. However, even if his serve was also going down the drain, he managed to bring the third set to the breaker. Surprisingly, it was Millman to win it after Federer wasn’t able to convert another set point when he was leading 6-5.
The 4th set was another nightmare for the Swiss that after he managed to break the Australian (4-2), he was unable to consolidate his lead to drop his serve soon after. One point was particularly ugly when Federer netted an extremely comfortable overhead (with Millman “out of the court”) when the Swiss was AD-40 up (that would have been 5-2). The following tiebreak was another disaster for Federer that los 6 consecutive points (from 1-0 to 1-6) before losing the match 3-6 7-5 7-6 (7) 7-6 (3).
The stats
Federer committed 76 unforced errors and 10 double faults. Roger made things worse with his weird tactic of hitting an insane amount of dropshots against Millman (that is a very fast player).
Kudos to Millman, but that was quite ugly for Roger.
Roger Federer made an incredible 76 unforced errors against Millman today and he had a first serve percentage of just 49%. #USOpen pic.twitter.com/JQCq7MBShG
