ILLNESS. Anisimova explains why she withdrew vs. Fernandez in Indian Wells

These are the reasons why Amanda Anisimova had to withdraw in Indian Wells

Amanda Anisimova Retires From Indian Wells

Amanda Anisimova was having a fantastic campaign in Indian Wells and she was extremely close to demolishing Leylah Fernandez when she had 3 consecutive match points when leading 6-2 5-3 40-0. However, Amanda didn’t manage to close the match, and after failing to convert another match point, she lost the 2nd set. Anisimova looked very distressed in the last few minutes, and she decided to retire.

There were speculations that Amanda was struggling with her nerves, especially after being abruptly ditched by her coach Darren Cahill after their first training session in Indian Wells.

However, Amanda explained that she retired because she was struggling with an illness. She disclosed:

“Hi everyone, unfortunately I’ve been quite sick the last few days and yesterday woke up feeling very ill.

I wanted to try to push through it in the match and continue playing the tournament. I couldn’t go on with the match anymore because I felt like I was putting my health at risk at that point.

It’s disappointing for me to end this week like this, but that’s just the way it is sometimes. I’ll try to be better next time. I’ll look forward to getting back on the court soon. And please keep your negative comments to yourself.”
