Amanda Anisimova was having a fantastic time in Indian Wells. She won the Eisenhower Cup before demolishing Emma Navarro 6-2 6-2 in the opening match at the local WTA1000.
Amanda was just outstanding when facing Leylah Fernandez in the 2nd round to grab what looked like to be a decisive lead (6-2 5-3 40-0). Then Anisimova had 15 horrible minutes with the match going to the decider. Amanda looked completely distressed during the last few games and she decided to retire before playing the decider.
Coach Cahill dropping Anisimova
Amanda has been going through a couple of very tough years. She used to be coached by her father before he suddenly died before the 2019 US Open. From that moment, Anisimova was unable to find her best tennis clearly struggling to find the right balance.
Simona Halep’s former coach Darren Cahil accepted to be her full-time coach and things started to click for Amanda in January. After winning a WTA250 event in Melbourne she reached the 4th round at the Australian Open after defeating Naomi Osaka.
In Indian Wells, after their first training, Cahill abruptly dropped Amanda saying that he was burned out. That was yet another blow for the American player that was fighting tears during her match against Fernandez.
