ACAPULCO DEFAULT. Zverev on probation to play in Indian Wells and Miami

Sascha Zverev will be allowed to play in Indian Wells and Miami.

Sascha Zverev Will Play In Indian Wells

A couple of weeks ago, Alexander Zverev defaulted in Acapulco after a rather scary outburst against the chair umpire. The German player forfeited his prize money ($40,000) and the ATP points.

The suspension

Sascha was indeed found guilty of an Aggravated Behaviour under the Player Major Offense section of ATP Rules. Many were expecting a suspension given the fact that his conduct was extremely violent and quite dangerous for the chair umpire. The ATP decided to suspend the player for 8 weeks giving him an additional $20,000 fine.

The probation and Indian Wells

However, the suspension and the additional fine will be “frozen” because Zverev will be on probation for 1 year. Therefore, Sascha will play in both Indian Wells and Miami.

This is the official statement from the ATP.

“However, the fine and suspension are withheld on the condition that, over a probation period ending 22 February 2023 (one year from the incident), the player does not incur a further Code Violation that results in a fine for:

• Unsportsmanlike Conduct based upon an act, such as disrespectful or aggressive behaviour directed towards an official, opponent, spectator, or other person during or upon conclusion of a match

• Verbal or Physical Abuse of an official, opponent, spectator, or any other person while on-court or on-site.
If the conditions are met, the penalties will be formally dismissed following the completion of the probation period. If the conditions are not met, the penalties will be invoked after any appeal process is exhausted.”
