Federer, Nadal pay tribute to Ferrer after he played his last slam

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and the tennis world salute David Ferrer after he played his last match at a major.

David Ferrer has always been regarded as one of the nicest and most professional guys on tour.

At 36 years of age and with 27 titles under his belt, the Spaniard has announced that this US Open was his last slam. Destiny decided that Rafael Nadal had to be his opponent. Yes, his good friend that has beaten him in 8 finals (conceding just 1 set).

Unfortunately, David’s last match at the US Open ended with a retirement (the 1st of his great slam career!), and that happened when he was leading Rafa of one break in the second set.  The pain to his calf was too much, and the match ended when on a 3-6 4-3 scoreline.

I am proud of my career. FERRER

Soon after the match, David commented

“Calf, yeah. In the second set, the first game, the second game, I had another shot.

I called to the physio. With 3-2, one more time. The problem was I had this injury two years ago. I knew that it was impossible to finish the match. I tried two more games.

Finally, I decided to retire because it was worst play and broke it, break everything. Well, of course, I’m sad because it’s my last Grand Slam. I was enjoying playing the match against Rafa. I was playing good. But anyway, I am proud of myself, with my career.”

Rafa played his tribute to David to say

“I’m very, very sorry for him – he’s one of the closest friends on tour.

We shared amazing moments together, playing the French Open final, a couple of finals of the Davis Cup and winning a couple of titles.

He’s one of the greatest tennis players we’ve had in our country, so it’s sad for me to see him finish like this, but he deserves everything because he’s a hard worker, a great person, and a fantastic player.”
