Bogota: Jankovic wins tough opener

A difficult start of the tournament for Jelena Jankovic.

Seed no.1 had to play a combative Mathilde Johansson to beat the world no.147 7-5 7-5 in 2 hours and 8 minutes.

From Jelena

The defending champion commented “The conditions are a little bit different from what I played in last week and throughout the year. It’s high altitude, so the ball was really flying off my racquet. And not a little out, but one or two meters out. I only came here three days ago, so that’s not enough to get used to it and feel comfortable.

But I was fighting hard and was trying to stay strong even when I wasn’t playing well. I managed to get through, so hopefully I’ll get better and better with each match.”

Next vs. Shapatava

Jelena will play world no.215 lucky loser Sofia Shapatava in the second round.
