Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev will face off in a very interesting Australian Open semifinal on Friday.
Stefanos and Daniil are well-known to have rather an edgy rivalry after “that” match they played in Miami in 2018.
What happened in Miami?
Daniil Medvedev defeated Stefanos 2-6 6-4 6-2 in what would have been an anonymous 1st round. Instead, that match remained in the history books. Tsitsipas looked in control of the match when he was leading 6-2 3-2, but eventually he lost the encounter and the cool at the end of the match.
According to Tsitsipas, Medvedev was upset with the Greek player for not apologizing for a let. However, the rally went on for several shots after that let. Later Tsitsipas revealed that he forgot about it, and he was stunned seeing that Medvedev got mad about it. Stefanos was under the impression that that was a dirty tactic to get into his head and defeat him.
“The bullshit Russian and the small kid”
Things escalated when Stefanos insulted Daniil at the net, famously calling him the “Bullshit Russian.” Medvedev reacted badly, saying: “Stefanos you better shut your *** up.”
The umpire had to intervene to avoid things becoming physical and (also famously) Daniil said: “He’s a small kid who doesn’t know how to fight.”
Even if they are not best friends, after many years, Stefanos and Daniil are on good terms.
