Why Nadal wasn’t surprised by Shapovalov upsetting Zverev at the Australian Open

Rafael Nadal explains why he wasn't suprised by Shapovalov defeating Zverev in Melbourne

Nadal On Shapovalov

According to many Rafael Nadal was on a collision course with Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open. However, that did not happen after Denis Shapovalov defeated the German in straight sets.

During the press conference that followed Rafael Nadal’s successful match against Mannarino, the Spanish sensation revealed that he was not surprised that Shapovalov defeated Zverev. Rafa commented:

“[I was surprised] Not that much. I mean, he [Zverev] was a bit favorite probably because of his ranking, but was not a clear favorite, Sascha in that match, no?

Everybody knows as I said before, how good is Denis when he’s playing well. So of course you didn’t expect a three-sets victory, but that is what happened. I didn’t see the match, of course, but that said, of course, Denis played a great game.

I don’t know if Sascha played well or not, but even considering Sascha was not playing fantastic today, to win in straight sets against Sascha is because he played a fantastic match, no? Surprise? Very little. Honestly, no, it was not a clear match at all.”
