Charleston disaster: Stephens out once again in opener

Another day another mess for the top seeds in Charleston.

Funny enough Sloane Stephens and Serena Williams were on a collision course in Charleston and both crashed out in the opener 6-4 6-4.

The two stories are rather different. Serena was just dead tired… actually she wasn’t even Serena so… there is definitely an excuse. But Sloane’s exit is rather different.

This is the 3rd tournament that the young American crashes out in the very first match. At least this time she lost to a player that is definitely posed to crack in the top10 sooner or later.

19 year-old Elina Svitolina from Ukraine has already defeated another “golden-lady” (Genie Bouchard) in Miami and now she takes out also Sloane Stephens.

Elina was always in full control of the match against Sloane to lead 4-1 and 4-1 in the first and second set. So it was always Sloane to gasp. Eventually the Ukraine wrapped up the match in just 85 minutes.

Elina will play the next match against either Belinda Bencic (another terrible teenager) or Marina Erakovic.

Now ranked world no.35 Svitolina has good chances to break in the top30 if she wins the next 2 rounds. (see rankings)
