Nick Kyrgios and Fabio Fognini were meant to have a tasty first-round match in Sydney on Monday. Unfortunately, that will not happen after the Australian player withdraws from the tournament for the second consecutive week. Nick declined to play in Melbourne last week, saying that he was struggling with asthma (but he confirmed he didn’t have covid at that time).
Kyrgios will play the Australian Open
However, now it has been confirmed that this time Nick tested positive for Covid. Fortunately he has no symptoms and he is positive he will play the Australian Open. He released the following statement.
“Hey Everyone, I just want to be open and transparent with everyone, the reason I have had to pull out of Sydney is because I tested positive for Covid. I am feeling healthy at the moment with no symptoms. I wish everyone all the best and to stay safe where you can. If all goes well I will see you all at The Australian Open.”
Fabio Fognini will play against lucky loser Daniel Altmaier.

Currently ranked no.114, the Australian played his last match on the 25th of September 2021 when he surrendered to world no.4 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 6-4 in the round robin in the Laver Cup (draw).
This year Nick has managed to achieve a 0-0 win-loss record.
Fabio Fognini in 2022
Now the world no.36, Fabio played his last match on the 1st of November 2021 when he was defeated by world no.38 Marton Fucsovics 6-1 6-7(6) 7-6(5) in the 1st round in Paris (draw).
This year Fognini has managed to achieve a 0-0 match record.
Nick Kyrgios and Fabio Fognini squared off only once. Their actual record is 1-0 for Kyrgios. When they played, Nick Kyrgios won 6-3 6-3 in the 3rd round in Miami (Miami Open) in March 2018.
