Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas are widely considered the most representative Greek athletes. Nevertheless, this year, basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo won the prestigious Award of being the best male Greek athlete of the year after an incredible season.
Tennis was still very well represented, with Maria Sakkari being voted Greece’s Top Female Athlete of the Year. On receiving the award, Maria commented:
“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized as the best female Greek athlete this year. I am very thankful for all your support and excited to continue improving myself inside and outside of the court.”

Ranked no.6 (career-high), the Greek played her last match on the 16th of November when she was defeated by world no.7 Anett Kontaveit 6-1 3-6 6-3 in the semifinal in Guadalajara (draw).
During this season the Greek achieved a compiled 38-20 win-loss record. Maria Sakkari’s best performance of this season was reaching the final in Ostrava.
Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2021
Currently the world no.4, Stefanos played his last match on the 15th of November when he surrendered to world no.5 Andrey Rublev 6-4 6-4 in the round robin in the Nitto ATP Finals (draw).
This season Stefanos achieved a 55-19 match record. Tsitsipas clinched 2 titles in 2021 in Monte-Carlo and in Lyon. Stefanos reached the final in Acapulco, in Barcelona and at the French Open.
