Simona Halep survives Genie Bouchard in Indian Wells

Simona Halep confirms her top10 status with another great match.

The Romanian had to face the new rising star Genie Bouchard in a rather tough match. Simona won the opener rather easily (6-2) to be stunned in the second set by a fierce comeback from Genie (6-1).

The most critical moment of the match was the second part of the decider. In fact, Genie won a critical break in the 7th game to lead 4-3. At that point it seemed as the Canadian had the best chance to get through, but Simona re-grouped to win the 2 following 3 games.

Halep: I wasn’t at my best

Simona wasn’t happy for her tennis, but she was proud for the fighting I knew she’s a great player and playing really well, so I just tried to do my game, play aggressive and play fast.

It wasn’t my best tennis today, but I was fighting a lot. I did well. I think I came back in the third set really well. I did everything I could do during the match today. She’s improving tournament by tournament so I’m really happy that I won this match.”

Bouchard: She has a lot of experience

Genie was surprised by Simona “She was very, very solid. I expected a good player, but I think she has a really good defense – that’s a weapon of hers. It really puts pressure on her opponents to finish the point. She has a lot of experience too – she’s won a lot of titles and has been there in that third set battling.

She was a break down and came up with some great tennis. She played very well.”

Simona will play the third round against either Casey Dellacqua or Lauren Davis.
