Indian Wells: Sharapova, Ivanovic win opener; Kerber and Lisicki crash out

We have a couple of interesting results in the 2nd round in Indian Wells.

Sharapova

Maria didn’t have to battle much to overcome world no. 86 Julia Goerges. Maria conceded only 5 games (6-1 6-4) in 67 minutes. It was a typical Sharapova’s match with Maria blasting everything she could at her opponent and (of course) committing an insane amount of double faults (7)

“The first matches are always tricky, especially having not played in a few weeks, indoor or outdoor,” Maria said. “She is also a tricky opponent, and she’s capable of playing good tennis. She hasn’t been as consistent with her results as she probably would have liked to be recently, but she’s had her results and she’s beaten top players before, so it’s never easy facing her in your first match.”

Ivanovic

Ana had a much more difficult encounter against world no. 43 Elina Svitolina. The Serbian lost the first set 6-4, she won the second set 7-5 and she went through a fierce battle in the decider. From the 6th game (3-3) there were 6 consecutive breaks from both sides and the match went to the tiebeak where Ana won it at 1. The final score was 4-6 7-5 7-6 (1)

Kerber

That was a bad day for Angelique. The world no. 6 was shocked by world no.72 Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor in 3 sets. The worst part of it was that Angelique failed when she was serving for the match (5-4 in the second set) to then lose the match 2-6 7-6 (5) 6-4.

Lisicki

The Wimbledon runner-up also couldn’t get to the third round in Indian Wells as she was upset by world no. 241 Aleksandra Wozniak that is trying to get back to a more decent ranking. The Canadian won this match even if she scored much less points than Sabine (106 vs. 117). The final score was 7-5 1-6 7-6 (5). Match Stats
