That was quite a tournament for Venus Williams!
The former world no.1 won the title in Dubai without conceding a single set to her opponents… and we are talking about world class players! Venus has defeated Vesnina, Ivanovic, Pennetta, Wozniacki and now Alize Cornet that dismissed her sister (the supreme Serena!) in the semifinals.
Interesting enough only Flavia Pennetta succeeded in winning more than 4 games in a set against Venus… all the other players couldn’t win more than 3 games per set (see stats!)
The match against Alize was also one way traffic to even bagel (6-0) the Frenchwoman in the last set.
Venus: I had a good week
The American had nice words for Alize to comment “First of all, I think Alize is playing great. I think if she continues to play like that, she’s going to play deep in a lot of tournaments and improve. It’s great to see that, because she’s a great addition to the game. She brings so much passion on the court, so it’s great to see her playing well. I mean, I was fully expecting to play Serena, so for her to get that win was awesome.
“But I have had a good week. Everything is falling together pretty much, is all I can say.”
After this tournament Venus will break in the top 30. If she keeps on playing like this she will definitely go for more. If she finds some continuity she is definitely a top 10 player.
