Emma Raducanu hit the headlines after announcing that she decided to part ways with her coach Andrew Richardson soon after winning the US Open.
It’s not hundred percent clear why there was a split. According to rumors, Andrew Richardson had an agreement to coach Emma only for a short period of time. In addition, he wanted to dedicate his attention to developing his son, who is an interesting prospect. Nevertheless, in her statement, Emma said that she was looking for a coach who has good experience at WTA level. She is now testing have chemistry with Johanna Konta’s previous coach Esteban Carril.
Tracy Austin
During a recent interview with the Tennis Channel, tennis legend and former world number one Tracy Austin explains why she believes it was a mistake for Emma to part ways with Andrew. Tracy said that so many things had changed for Raducanu that she had to keep some stability. Since her chemistry with Andrew was extremely good, she probably made a mistake in parting ways with him.
“She fired her coach, and that’s not something I think that she should have changed quite yet because there are too many changes already.
I think the foundation is so important – your family, your agent. Max Einsenbud is her agent, he’s been through it with Maria Sharapova who won at 17 so I think that should be helpful.
She needs to have something that’s the same as that she had at the US Open because she’s stayed the same, she’s more confident, but everything around her has changed. So the parents need to try to help her find that foundation again.”
Back to the previous coach
Talking about hiring top coaches, Tracy added that they are quite expensive, even if the investment is often rewarding. However, Richardson had a great relationship with Emma, and therefore, she can see why she shouldn’t be back working with him,
“These top coaches, the dad said, are expensive. And yes they are, so I’d say go back to Andrew Richardson. I saw them at the US Open before each match, they seemed to have a nice camaraderie,” she added.
