This was a magnificent week for Tomas Berdych that has played some of his best tennis in Rotterdam.
The Czech didn’t win a title since October 2012 (Stockholm) and he was adamant to stop this drought.
Seeded no. 3, Tomas had to dispatch some dangerous players such as Janowicz, Gulbis and Cilic in the final. The only match that he was really challenged was the one with Janowicz as he failed to convert 5 set points in the first set and he was able to win only 6-4 at the decider.
With Marin Cilic he has never struggled. In the first set Berdych won the decisive break in the 3rd game (2-1) to finally win the opener 6-4. IN the second set he got an early break in the first game to then break again Marin in the 7th game (5-2) and wrap up the match 6-4 6-2.
Tomas’ game was much more effective than his opponent, so the Czech won 61 points vs. Cilic’s 43. See match Stats.
Berdych: I am extremely happy
Tomas was elated by his triumph to comment “It feels absolutely amazing. It’s been a while, actually 16 months since I won a title. To win a title in Rotterdam it’s a nice bonus. I’m extremely happy with the way I handled it throughout the week. I’ve been serving pretty well, which has been the strong part of my game.”
This was Berdych’s 9th carrer title.
Cilic: I enjoyed it here
Maring wasn’t too disappointed by his loss to comment “It was a tough one today. What made the difference in the end was that Tomas served really well…Overall I think the tournament was great. I played great tennis and enjoyed it here. I had a great run of nine wins and I hope to make that run soon again.”
