Emma Raducanu and Flavia Pennetta share 1 title: the US Open. It is interesting to notice that while Flavia Pennetta won the American slam when she was at the very end of her fantastic career, the US Open was the first title won by Emma at top level.
During a recent interview, Flavia Pennetta disclosed her unhappiness for the fact that there are no strong players in the WTA tour who are dominating the scene.
During a recent interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, Flavia commented: “I don’t like it. What is happening, this very strong discontinuity, in my opinion, is not good for tennis.
“In my time, it could never have happened that a young girl played from qualifying, like Emma Raducanu in New York, to win a grand slam.
Top athletes made too much difference. There is something wrong. Charisma is missing, so women’s tennis is more difficult to sell.”
While it’s true that the WTA tour does not have any top player dominating, it’s also true that many young stars are shining. Nevertheless, according to Flavia, this is a flaw and not a strength for women’s tennis.
