Lorenzo Musetti and Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune are among the most interesting young tennis players on the ATP Tour. Unfortunately, both of them had to cope with the challenge of freezing the ranking points. The ATP and WTA have introduced a rather tricky system to protect the rankings during the global pandemic. The system has been widely criticized for protecting top players and make it hard for the upcoming to go up in the rankings.
Why Musetti and Rune disagree
For some reason, the ATP will be back to total normality in terms of the ranking system only by August 2022. Rune posted a rather aggressive statement saying that this ranking freeze is preventing him from being in the top 100 and accessing the main draw at the Australian Open. Lorenzo Musetti liked Rune’s post in agrement.
This was his post:
“You know guys that I am a hard-working man and I normally never complain.
This year I have fought very hard to achieve my goals of becoming top 100. Atp has continuously made it very difficult for me and many other young upcoming players because they have had a frozen ranking from 2019 meaning players on the atp ranking still have their points from results made in 2019.
No matter their results in 2020 and 2021. Looking 2 years back on the normal ranking I would today be ranked 62 in the world and not 124. Does it matter? Yes, when you are ambitious and hard-working it matters to get your reward. With that ranking, I would be able to enter better tournaments and I would feel that my hard work paid off.
I feel tired and angry now because I think the system is unfair. I love my tennis but we have to compete on equal conditions.”

Currently ranked no.69, the Italian played his last match on the 8th of October when he was defeated by world no.45 Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-1 6-3 in the 1st round in Indian Wells (draw).
At the moment, during this season the Italian has achieved an overall 32-25 win-loss record. Lorenzo Musetti’s most significant result of the current season was getting to the final in the Antalya Challenger and the Biella 2 Challenger.
Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune in 2021
Now ranked no.123 (career-high), Holger played his last match on the 17th of October when he was defeated by world no.97 Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3 6-4 in the qualifications in Antwerp (draw).
Currently, during this season the Dane has managed to achieve an overall 63-24 match record. Holger conquered 4 titles in 2021 Bressuire, in the Biella 7 Challenger, in the San Marino Challenger and in the Verona Challenger. Rune was the runner-up in M15 Manacor, in M25 Villena and in the Oeiras 4 Challenger.
