Sensational Kvitova saves MP to beat Venus Williams in Doha

Another great match from Petra Kvitova that defeats former world no.1 Venus Williams in 3 sets.

The match became a battle in the third set. In fact, Petra won the opener 6-2, to lose the second set with the same score.

In the third set the world no. 6 was 1-4 down against Venus to then win 4 consecutive games. Petra had the chance to serve for the match on a 5-4 score line and she squandered one match point to go straight to the tie break.

At the breaker Venus had also a match point when she was leading 7-6, but then Kvitova got her way through to win 9-7. Match Stats.

Kvitova: I was fighting for every ball

The winner commented “She played all out today, and I don’t really remember what happened, but I’m happy I was able to come back in the third set. I was fighting for every ball and felt really confident on the court, so it was a great feeling for me. In the end, it was just an incredible tie-break.

“Even when she’s injured or if she’s not playing and then coming back, she’s always playing great.”

Venus: All credits to her

The American said “I obviously put myself in a great position to end the match, which is the positive I take out of this match.

But she played well. I have to give her credit for that. I think I just started to rush a little too much, and maybe I wanted too much of a big shot instead of just working the point and getting the win. Sometimes I think I was just approaching it with the wrong mentality. I think I pulled it together towards the end, but she came up with some really great shots.”

Next vs. Safarova

Kvitova will play the next round against her friend and compatriot Lucie Safarova. Head to head is 2-0 for Petra
