There are some updates about the 2nd day in Doha.
Ivanovic
Ana gets to the second round in Doha as Daniela Hantuchova retired in the second set when she was 5-7 0-1 down for a knee injury. That was a pity as the match was rather entertaining.
Ivanovic commented “She started really well, and I managed to get back into the set and break her back. I played some really good tennis towards the end of that first set and then in the second.”
Ana will play Klara Zakopalova in the second round. Head to head is 2-0 for Ana.
Bouchard
Genie Bouchard, possibly the player of the year, had a terrible upset at the hands of world no.42 Bethanie Mattek-Sand 7-5 6-1. The Canadian imploded in the second set to win just one game a possibly prove that her schedules are a bit too frantic (she competed in the Fed Cup just a couple of days before).
Cibulkova
Dominika is also a potential “victim” of the Fed Cup to retire during her match against world no. 180 Alisa Kleybanova on 5-all score line.
Dominika said “Unfortunately I became very sick today and suddenly did not feel well. I wanted to give it a try today and I did everything I could to try to play, but I could not continue.”
