Injured Lisicki wins tricky opener in Pattaya

Seed no.1 Sabine Lisicki is the hot favourite to win the tournament in Pattaya, or at least she was.

The world no. 15 was leading 5-3 in the first set against world no. 107 Donna Vekic to then struggle with her shoulder.

Finally the German won the match in 3 sets (7-5 2-6 6-4), but that pain makes her wonder about her chances in this tournament.

Lisicki: I really wanted not to lose in the first round

Sabine commented after the match “It happened during the match and as it went on it got worse and worse. It was really, really tough to serve at all. I couldn’t serve the way I wanted and the way I usually serve.

“But the most important thing is that I fought it out. I ran down every ball. I played the finals here last year and have good memories so I really wanted to keep on playing and finish the match and not lose in the first round.”

Sabine should play in the next round Andrea Hlavackova. Head to head is 1-0 for Lisicki, but the big question mark is going to be if she will make it.
