Inspired by Mandela Serena Williams ends 13-years boycott to play Indian Wells

The relationship between the Williams family and Indian Wells has never been really good.

What has sparked the big mess was the 2001 tournament. Venus and Serena were meant to play each other in the semi-final, but Venus pulled out citing injury.

That sparked a big controversy and the public was jeering Serena during her final against Clijsters and they also attacked Venus and the family when they got to the stadium to see Serena.

From that moment on Serena and Venus refused to play in Indian Wells. Now it’s time to come back… at least for Serena.

Serena: Mandela inspired me

The world no.1 commented “It actually crossed my mind a couple days ago, or after I saw the movie.”I thought about it… Right now I don’t know. I just have to focus on this tournament.

But I think Mandela was a really amazing man. I felt really honored to have a chance to meet him, get to know him a little bit, and get to know his story a little better.”

Serena has officially entered in the list of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells
