Strange start of the season for John Isner.
The world no. 13 had to retire from the Hopman Cup for an injury to his ankle to then win the tournament in Auckland (!!!???) and then withdraw from the Australian Open.
John had to withdraw when he was 6-2 7-6 down against Martin Klizan.
Isner: I couldn’t move…
John was very unhappy to comment “I know movement is not the best part of my game. but at a certain point I’ve got to be able to move without pain and I wasn’t able to do that today.”
…Auckland was bizarre
“I was able to win my first match and didn’t feel good afterwards and then I won again. The whole thing in Auckland was bizarre because I never expected to win that tournament,” he added.
“I didn’t come down here to win Auckland. I love that tournament but I came down here to try to do well here and that wasn’t the case.”
Apparently the injury is not serious as an MRI showed no bones are broken… but it was enough to make him retire from the first slam.
