What a wonderful week for Tsvetana Pironkova!
The world no. 107 came straight from the qualifications to win the title in Sydney. We can’t really deny that she has fully deserved the title. Tsvetana had to win 8 matches (that’s a slam!), she has lost only 1 set (at the tiebreak) and she has beaten players 3 top 10 players!!!
Pironkova was great against Angelique Kerber. She gained 21 break points (6 converted) to score 82 points vs. Kerber’s 74. The match ended after 1 hour and 36 minutes.
Pironkova’s emotional speech
After the match Tsvetana dedicated the title to his late grandfather. “Where do I start? Mum, dad, I have a trophy. I’d like to dedicate my first title to a very special person, who is not among any more, my grandfather Nikola. I know you’re here tonight. I love you.”
Great story….Well done!!!
