Dominic Thiem was not able to defend his US Open title this year because he has been still recovering from his wrist injury. Nevertheless, the Austrian champion agreed to comment on the current US Open for the Tennis Channel.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andy Murray found themselves entangled in rather a nasty controversy after the former world number 1 didn’t like Tsitsipas’ long toilet break in the 5th set.
Dominic Thiem was asked her to comment about what has happened. The US Open champion said that he could understand both parts. On one side, Stefanos Tsitsipas really needed to change his pants, which cannot be done on court. On the other, Dominic says that these breaks are too long and they need to be regulated.
“First of all, it was a hell of a match. Great for tennis. It’s also nice that things are heating up from time to time. But I saw most of the match, and I can totally understand Andy. But my point of view is that, especially with the conditions of New York, you need to go out in a five-setter at least twice because you just need to change your pants,” said Thiem.
“There’s no way around that, especially if you sweat that much. But there should be a time limit to that because if you go out to change all your clothes, it doesn’t take long, 3-4 minutes, maximum 5, so there should be a time limit on that. I heard Andy’s press conference and he was right. It just cools down your body and you are getting stiff and it is not easy at all,” he added.
Unfortunately, Stefanos Tsitsipas was also accused of cheating during his Cincinnati semi-final against Sascha Zverev. The German player raised the suspicion that the Greek player was coached by text by his father during his long breaks.
