Cori Gauff is arguably the most followed American player during this edition of the US Open after the retirement of Venus and Serena Williams for injuries.
Coco is widely considered the heiress of the Williams sisters and with her likable personality, she already enjoys a rather wide fan base.
Coco won a tough battle in the US Open first round after defeating Magda Linette 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Talking about how much she respects Venus and Serena Williams, Coco Gauff revealed some special memories:
“I do remember coming here since I was eight years old pretty much every year coming to watch them [Venus and Serena] really. That’s probably the only reason why we spent so much money on tickets and travel, is to watch them play.”
Coco admitted that she is not very happy for not having Venus and Serena competing at the US Open. Gauff revealed:
“Not easy to see [them out of the US Open], especially for me, since I’m a big fan. Obviously, the reason why I’m here is because of them. So I guess it’s a little bit weird not having at least one of them play. But I wish both of them a speedy recovery. I will say the news was definitely shocking for me, and I was a tad bit disappointed.”
