IN the last few weeks, Stefanos Tsitsipas has constantly been hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons. The Greek sensation is definitely one of the most intriguing players on tour, but he has been drawing his fans away with his behavior.
Stefanos Tsitsipas has been often criticized for getting prolonged toilet breaks during his matches. Once, he even left the court after winning the first set in 23 minutes, leaving his opponent *Casper Ruud) speechless.
During his recent semi-final in Cincinnati, Tsitsipas was publicly blasted by his opponent Sascha Zverev during one of his toilet breaks. The German player said that it was plausible that Stefanos was receiving some sort of coaching during these breaks by his father.
The US Open controversy
Andy Murray went ballistic against the Greek player after he got yet another prolonged toilet break before playing the first set against the former world number 1. Andy also stated clearly that Tsitsipas was cheating. Later in the press conference, he added that he lost respect for the Greek.
Stefanos Tsitsipas was asked to comment about the remarks of his recent opponents. The world number 3 clearly stated that he was not cheating getting any coaching during these toilet breaks:
“I have never in my career done that. I don’t know what kind of imagination it takes to go to that point. That’s not something I want to take seriously because it’s absolutely ridiculous to be thinking about that. Anyway, that’s it.”
Stefanos Tsitsipas also added that he was playing by the rules and he had to have a chat with Andy Murray about his complaints.
“If there’s something that he has to tell me, we should speak the two of us to kind of understand what went wrong.
I don’t think I broke any rules. I played by the guidelines, how everything is. Yeah, definitely something for both of us to kind of chat about and make sure. I don’t know how my opponent feels when I’m out there playing the match. It’s not really my priority.
As far as I’m playing by the rules and sticking to what the ATP says is fair, then the rest is fine. I have nothing against him. Absolutely nothing,” added Tsitsipas.
