Venus Williams withdraws from Hobart International

Venus Williams had a fine and tough week in Auckland where she has lost in the final to a very good Ana Ivanovic.

The former world no.1 was meant to go and play in Hobart soon after, but probably playing 2 consecutive tournaments just before the Australian Open would not have been a great idea. So Venus will skip Hobart.

This is a good news for seed no.5  Flavia Pennetta that had to play with Venus in the first round.

From the director

Mark Handley, the tournament director, commented,

“I don’t believe she has an injury. I just think that she’s played a lot of tough, close matches over in Auckland and in the lead-up to a first Grand Slam she’s not taking any chances.”Venus is trying to get back to a better ranking (now world no.47) after coping with many fitness issues.
