Stefanos Tsitsipas is at the center of a controversy after he declared that he has not been vaccinated and has no intention of getting the jab unless it becomes mandatory.
Recently, Tsitsipas commented:
“No one has told me anything. No one has made it a mandatory thing to be vaccinated. At some point, I will have to, I’m pretty sure about it, but so far, it hasn’t been mandatory to compete, so I haven’t done it, no.”
The government not pleased
Last year, Stefanos participated in a commercial for the Greek government asking people to follow the measures to fight the Coronavirus.
The new government spokesman, Giannis Oikonomou, slammed Stefanos’ comments to say:
“Stefanos Tsitsipas did not participate in the campaign in favor of vaccination but in the campaign in favor of protection measures. Stefanos Tsitsipas is a great athlete, his skills in sports and his contribution to sports in the country are unquestionable.
What is at stake, however, is his ability to assess the need for vaccinations or whether the vaccine has been tested for a sufficient period of time. And it is questionable why he has neither the knowledge nor the studies nor the research work that would allow him to form an opinion about it.
These issues are analyzed, informed by the society and placed by those who have studied them, those who have studied them, those who have served them through their medical function in Greece and in the rest of the world.
It would be good to refer to them and I would say, those who through their excellent presence and performance in other places are also a point of reference for wider social groups, it would be good to be careful in expressing such views.”
Stefanos participated to various campaigns to help to counter the spread of the Coronavirus.

Tsitsipas in Cincinnati, ranking, and results in 2021
Ranked no.3 (career-high), Stefanos has achieved a composed 46-13 record in 2021. Stefanos is now competing in Cincinnati where he toppled Sebastian Korda 7-65 6-3.
Stefanos Tsitsipas will compete against the world no.27 Lorenzo Sonego in the 3rd round on Thursday at 7:00 pm on GRANDSTAND. The head to head is 1-0 for Tsitsipas.
Stefanos conquered 2 titles in 2021 in Monte-Carlo and in Lyon. Tsitsipas reached the final in Acapulco (Abierto Mexicano Telcel), in Barcelona (Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell) and at the French Open.
