Rafael Nadal, Felix Auger Aliassime, Alex De Minaur and Grigor Dimitrov are the top seeds in Washington on the local ATP 500. The defending champion is Nick Kyrgios, who won the event in 2019. The tournament was not staged in 2020 because of the global pandemic.

This is the first time that Rafael Nadal plays this tournament in Washington. In theory, he is also supposed to play back-to-back the ATP1000s in Toronto and Cincinnati. Many believe that he will skip one of the two ATP1000 to arrive fresher to the US Open.

Nadal has decided to take a prolonged break after he lost in the French Open semi-final at the hands of Novak Djokovic. Therefore, Nadal skip the entire grass-court season and also decided not to play the Olympic Games.
