Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari are both out of the singles competitions in the Olympic Games. Nevertheless, they have considerable hopes to bring a medal to Greece in mixed doubles. Stefanos and Maria won their first-round match 6-3 6-4 against Felix Auger Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski (Team Canada). They will be opposed in the quarters to Ashleigh Barty and John Peers for a place in the semi-final.

Sakkari confident with Tsitsipas

Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas have great chemistry indeed. A few years ago, they even won a match against Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic in mixed doubles at the Hopman Cup.

During a recent interview, Maria commented:

“We’ve played with each other two and a half years ago and did really well, and now we are both better players. For sure we will try our best to get as far as we can for our country.

the fact that we have a good chemistry on court is the most important thing.”

At the moment ranked no.4 (career-high), Tsitsipas played his last match on the 28th

of July when he was overcome by world no.28 Ugo Humbert 2-6 7-6(4) 6-2 in the 3rd round in Tokyo (draw).

Currently, during this year Tsitsipas has managed to achieve a composed 42-12 record. The Greek has won 2 titles in 2021 in Monte-Carlo and in Lyon. Stefanos was the runner-up in Acapulco, in Barcelona and at the French Open.

Maria Sakkari in 2021

Ranked world no.19, Maria played her last match on the 27th of July when she lost to world no.6 Elina Svitolina 5-7 6-3 6-4 in the 3rd round in Tokyo (draw).

This year the Greek has managed to achieve an overall 24-12 win-loss record. Maria Sakkari’s most significant achievement of the current year was reaching the semifinal in Abu Dhabi, Melbourne, Miami and at the French Open.
