Being world no.1 is definitely not the key to be the top earners in tennis according to Forbes.
Federer
Roger had a rather bad season to win only 1 tournament in Halle and to finish as world no.6. This wasn’t an obstacle for the Swiss to win the megabucks in 2013. Apparently Roger bagged $72.5 million of which only $6.5 million were coming from the prize money.
Roger got $10million from Nike and he got some more money from Wilson Rolex, Credit Suisse, Mercedes Benz, Gillette, Lindt, Jura Elektroapparate and Moët & Chandon.
Sharapova
Maria ended the season as world no.4 and she practically didn’t play in the second half of 2013. This didn’t stop her to earn $29 million most of it from sponsorships from Nike, Head, Samsung Electronics, Tag Heuer and Evian.
