Naomi Osaka had high expectations for her campaign at the current Olympic Games, where she was considered the favorite to win the gold medal in singles. Unfortunately, the Japanese champion had to bow out as early as in the third round at the hands of an inspired Marketa Vondrousova (6-1 6-4).

Marketa was overjoyed after beating Naomi Osaka, saying that this was definitely one of the best matches and wins of her career. Vondrousova commented:
“I think this is one of the biggest wins of my career, for sure. I beat Simona [Halep] twice, but I think Naomi, she is the greatest now, the greatest in the game, and she’s also the face of the Olympics.”
After the match, Naomi Osaka admitted that she was struggling with the pressure. It is still not clear when the world number 2 will be back to competitions. Osaka is expected to defend her US Open title in one month’s time.
