Roger Federer has just lost in the quarterfinals in Wimbledon and he is expected to disclose if he will compete at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Roger said that he would make his announcement soon after the Championships after consulting with his team. Federer is on the official players’ list, but he is expected to withdraw.
Why Roger Federer will not play the Olympic Games
There are 4 reasons why Roger may not play the Games. The most important reason is that the Swiss sensation is not in a good physical condition, and the transition to hard courts may take some time while the Olympics will commence in a couple of weeks.
Because of the global pandemic, it was also announced that the Olympic Games would be staged without fans. Roger has often said that he cannot see himself playing in an empty stadium.
Roger Federer is more and more reluctant to travel without his family, an option that will not be available if he goes and competes in Tokyo.
Finally, because of his fitness, Federer has not big chance to win the gold medal in singles. He may have some opportunities if he plays mixed doubles with Belinda Bencic. However, his body may not allow him to be part of 2 competitions in the same moment.
Why Roger Federer should play the Olympic Games
It will be a difficult decision for Roger Federer to skip the Olympic games for 3 reasons.
First, Roger is becoming more and more an ambassador for Switzerland, and therefore it would not sound right not to represent his country at this Olympics.
Second, he has an important sponsorships contract with the Japanese brand Uniqlo that will be extremely pleased to take advantage of Roger Federer’s presence in Tokyo.
Finally, Roger has won almost everything in his career, but he misses a gold medal in singles. Indeed, he won the gold medal in doubles in Beijing back in 2008.
An official announcement by Roger Federer is expected soon.
