WEIRD. Andy Murray replies to accusations of “stealing” Norrie’s spot at the Olympics

Andy Murray replies a remark raised by a fan about his impending participation in the Olympic Games

Andy Murray gave the fantastic news that he will compete at the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo. The former world no.1 won the gold on 2 occasions (2012 and 2016), and he will try to go for more in Japan playing both singles and doubles.

Nevertheless, a tennis fan seemed to be in disagreement that Andy was chosen to represent his country despite his current results. Andy is ranked no.119 and he has a 6-4 win-loss record on 2021.

This tennis fan tweeted:

“Can’t quite figure out why @andy_murray has been picked for the Olympics singles & doubles given his results in 2021 in both formats. Pretty tough on @cam_norrie who just reached the singles final at Queens, and semis in the doubles.”

Probably with the surprise of this fan, it was Andy Murray to reply:

“Cam (Cameron Norrie) chose not to play… each nation is allowed 4 singles players…i used my special exemption as previous winner to take my spot in the draw.. it no bearing on Cam or any other British players chance to compete.”

Indeed, Cameron Norrie renounced to play the Olympics after releasing the following statement:

“Hey guys, I wanted to let everyone know that unfortunately I will not be competing this year in Tokyo. While I wish could compete in the Olympics and represent Great Britain, considering how the pandemic devastated the tennis calendar and created limited opportunities for players to move up the rankings, my team and I feel it is best for me to not partake in this year’s Olympics.

It is important that I can continue to prepare and focus for the tournaments leading up to the US Open, the US Open itself, and all subsequent events after as they are big opportunities to move up the ranks and keep momentum.

While I’m disappointed that I won’t be attending, the idea of representing my country is something that is a big goal of mine. Considering the enormous challenges this year’s Olympics has on a player’s schedule and the preparation needed, makes this one tough for myself to participate in.”
