WTA Rankings: Sorana Cirstea and Monica Puig at career high. Francesca Schiavone advances

Last week we had a couple minor WTA tournaments in Seoul and Guangzhou.

So there were no movements in the top 20, but some players made some important steps in their rankings.

Sorana Cirstea

The Romanian is still banking on a very good performance in Toronto where she lost in the final against Serena Williams. This result helped her to have some decisive steps in the rankings and now she is trying to consolidate her position.

Last week wasn’t really successful for Sorana as she has surprisingly lost to Bojana Jovanovsky 6-2  6-1 in the first round in Guangzhou, but a declining Ekaterina Makarova (she couldn’t defend last year’s point gained in Seoul) helped Sorana to reach the  21st spot in the rankings (career high).

Monica Puig

The 19 year old from Puerto Rico came absolutely from nowhere to trash Sara Errani in her first career match in Wimbledon (6-3 6-2) to then lose in the 4th round in 3 sets against Sloane Stephens. Losing in the quarters in Guangzhou gave the opportunity to Monica to climb 4 place and reach the 44th spot (career high).. she will go for more.

Francesca Schiavone

The super funny Italian lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the semifinal in Seoul to gain 9 poistions and being ranked world no.49.

Shuai Zhang

The biggest leap of the week has been recorded by Shuai Zhang that has won the WTA in Guangzhou to gain 38 places and be ranked no.74.

Vania King

The other Guangzhou  finalist, Vania King made also a giant step in the rankings to gain 30 positions and being ranked no.94.
