Finally we have the announcement.
Marin has been at the centre of a strange controversy as everybody actually knew that he failed a drug test to be suspended, but the ITF has never released a statement.
That was quite puzzling and even the world no.3 Andy Murray has criticized this situation saying that it was incredible al the silence on this thorny issue. (see article)
What happened?
Marin failed the test in Munich after playing with Ivan Dodig (funny enough he has also lost that match 6-4 6-2…bad day indeed). Apparently he bought some glucose supplement in a pharmacy in France and that is banned by the federation.
Then they notified the outcome of the test when Marin had to play De Scheppers in Wimbledon and Cilic decided not to play that game citing a knee injury.
From that moment he accepted to a voluntary provisional suspension.
ITF
According to the ITF an independent tribunal found that Cilic injested the banned stimulant inadvertently while taking the glucose supplements “and did not intend to enhance his performance in doing so.”
Marin: I am opposed to doping
Cilic came out with a statement saying “I wish to emphasize that I have never knowingly or deliberately taken any banned substances in my life and that I am opposed to any use of performance-enhancing substances in sport,”
…. Bad luck… see you in 2014!
