Jannik Sinner And Matteo Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner, and Lorenzo Sonego are the top Italian players in the ATP rankings.

Lorenzo Sonego was impressive in the recent ATP1000 in Rome after he reached the semifinals before losing in 3 sets to Novak Djokovic. After this week in Rome, Lorenzo Sonego goes up 5 places in the rankings to be the new world number 28 matching his previous career-high rank. This means that Lorenzo is now the Italian number 3. Lorenzo was meant to compete in Lyon this week. However, he decided to take a pause after his hectic week in Rome.

Matteo Berrettini remains the Italian number 1 after he reached the third round in Rome before surrendering to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Matteo is currently ranked number 9. Berrettini is not scheduled to play any tournament until the French Open.

Jannik Sinner was particularly unlucky in his draw in Rome, where he had to clash against Rafael Nadal as early as in the second round. The 19 year old played at the same level as the King of Clay, but eventually, it was the Spaniard to win the encounter in straight sets. Nevertheless, after Jannik Sinner reached the second round, he gained one place in the rankings to be the new world number 17 (career-high). Also, he confirmed his position as the Italian number 2. Jannik will play in Lyon this week, where he will face Aslan Karatsev in the opening match.

Lorenzo Musetti was also unlucky in the draw since a surprising Reilly Opelka stopped him in the second round before the American reached the semi-final. Musetti lost 6 places in the ranking and he is now the world number 88. Lorenzo Musetti will play in Lyon this week where he will face Felix Auger Aliassime in the first round.
