Former world no.5 Anna Chakvetadze retires from tennis

It had to come!

Anna was a very interesting player to have reached the 5th position in the rankings after a wonderful 2007 when she reached the quarters at the Australian Open, at the Roland Garros and she got to the final 4 in New York.

At 20 years of age, Ana had definitely a brilliant career ahead, but a nasty armed robbery when 6 men broke into her house to keep her and her father at knifepoint did a huge damage from a psychological point of view.

From that moment she started to struggle and her ranking started to plummet (see graph) to just end up nowhere (now she is ranked world no. 577).

Now Anna is struggling with a chronic back injury, and apparently, she can’t recover… so time to pull the plug.

Anna: I no longer see myself in professional tennis

After not playing for 1 year the Russian said “I no longer see myself in professional tennis so I am ready to say that my career is over,

Of course, this was a difficult decision and I thought hard about it but now it is finally taken. I understood that the point of return to tennis was behind me. I have a chronic back injury. So I took the decision to stop and start a new life.”

Anna had also some words about the attack they have suffered and the psychological impact she had from that “After this my season was a complete failure. They did not rob me at a good time. It affected my further career.” When the attack happened I thought that was it for us. But we stayed alive.”

Good Luck!
