Nadal is not very happy to play the Davis Cup in Madrid

Rafa is a happy guy, but now he really needs some time to relax.

The world no.2 has played a whopping 17 matches in 1 month to win back to win back to back in Montreal, Cincinnati and the US Open.

It’s time now for him to take a rest, but he can’t!  In fact, Rafa has been called to play the Davis Cup playoff against Ukraine on Friday and that is no good for him.

Besides his obvious need to some rest, Rafa is also concerned by a sudden “double change” of surface as he has played for 1 month on hard courts and now he should switch back to clay to play on hard courts again in Asia.

Rafa: The Davis Cup won’t help me

“Given the fatigue I am feeling, what I would like to do is rest and recuperate well physically and mentally for the Asian tour,” Nadal commented.

“It’s the final sprint of the year and I am fighting for something as special as finishing as number one,” added the 27-year-old, who last held the top ranking in June 2011 and slipped to five before his return from injury in February.

The Davis Cup won’t help me in that goal because to be prepared for what I have left it’s not good to change surfaces. But I said I would go already a few months ago, I committed myself and I will be in Madrid.I feel duty bound to go to Madrid and I feel duty bound to help the team so we stay in the World Group.

I believe Spain deserves to be among best for what it represents and has represented in the world of tennis for so many years.”

Correja’s move

The Davis Cup captain Alex Correja said that he will check Rafa’s conditions and he will probably ask Tommy Robredo (back in the top 20) and Fernando Verdasco (now ranked 33) to play the first round to then see if he can spare Rafa also on Sunday in the reverse singles.
