Stephens, Bouchard advance in New York

Stephens b Minella 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5)

That was a hard fought match by Sloane Stephens that survived world no. 110 Mandy Minella in a thrilling 3 setter.  The young American didn’t play at her best to commit an astonishing 55 unforced errors vs. 38 winners. Sloane also wasted a couple of match points on her on serve to wrap up the match only at the decisive tiebreak. Match Stats

Bouchard b Pliskova 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 

Genie Bouchard had also a tricky match against the world no. 72 Karolina Pliskova. The young Canadian had to battle for 2 hour and 16 minutes before winning this match.  Genie won 108 points vs. Pliskova’s  96. Match Stats.

 After the match Genie commented “I was expecting a lot of myself.  wanted to play at my highest level. I didn’t play that well but I battled my hardest and I’m proud of that but I hope to improve for the next match. My serve was on for the whole match, even thought it was close at the end.”

 “I was able to hold my serve easily and put pressure on her. I felt good at the end but I think she was starting to tire. I was running down every ball and I broke her to take the lead 6-5 and that was the turning point, that’s when I got my chance.” She added.

Genie will play Angelike Kerber in the second round. This will be the first match between these two.
