Novak Djokovic is a huge ambassador for Serbia and he has always professed the love for his country. Back in the days, Novak even refused an interesting offer from the UK to train in England and get the local nationality. Novak didn’t want to betray his country even if he didn’t have the success and money he achieved in the following years.

The elusive gold

Novak Djokovic has won all sorts of titles during his fabulous career, but for some reason, he has never managed to conquer a gold medal at the Olympic Games. He was extremely close to getting the elusive gold during the 2008 Olympics when he lost in the semi-final against Rafael Nadal after missing a memorable overhead. Eventually, the world number 1 left the match in tears. Djokovic won the bronze medal in China, but he would have been the hot favorite in the final against Fernando Gonzalez and that was definitely tough to digest.

During a recent interview, Novak commented about and his Olympic dreams:

“It is one of the dreams, of course. I don’t want to be ungrateful for winning bronze because that was also a good success.

I played semis in London and lost there, for third place, as well. I always find extra motivation to perform at my best when I’m representing the country and, especially at the Olympic games as we all know it’s the most historical sports event.”

Novak Djokovic is currently in Belgrade. Seeded number 1, he is about to start his campaign at the local ATP 250. Winning the home tournament will be his immediate task.
