Fantastic Isner upsets Djokovic in Cincinanti

What a great match from big Johny!

Even if Isner is ranked world no.22 he has all the weapons to beat anyone in the world especially if his serve works, and it really worked well with Nole.

The American didn’ blast tons of aces (“only” 9 on 15 service games), but he had a very high percentage of 1st serves in (74% in the match and 84% in the third set) and he won 80% of the points on his first serve!!! With this kind of stats you also wonder how Nole managed to get 4 break points (he converted only 1 in the second set).

The key of the match was the very last game when Nole was serving and leading 40-15. We were all expecting a tiebreak, but surprisingly Nole imploded to produce an incredible array of unforced errors. The last ones  were two terrible backhands that fell in the middle of the net. That happens also to great champions!

So that was it, John Isner won the match in 2 hours and 23 minutes scoring just 2 points more than Djokovic (111 vs 109). Match stats

Isner: One of the my greatest win as a tennis player

The American no.1 was elated by the win to comment “It was just so much fun to play out there. It’s one of the reasons why I work so hard to be able to be in a situation like that and to sort of enjoy it.

So it was a fantastic win for me. Certainly one of my greatest wins as a tennis player. I’m very happy.”

Nole: I have played a terrible match

Djokovic wan’t as happy to comment “Today I wasn’t able to capitalise on my opportunities and serves. You know, in some important moments some double faults, and that’s the way it is. The  conditions here, very fast, and it’s very difficult to return.  I mean, you can see he didn’t give me second serves in the third set.”

Next vs. Del Potro

John Isner will play Del Potro in the semifinal. Head to head is 4-0 for Del Potro.
