Garbine Muguruza looked in great form in Charleston. She breezed past Magdalena Frech 6-1 6-3 in the opening match, and she bagelled Yulia Putintseva in the following round to also lead 6-0 2-2. All of the sudden, Muguruza took a medical timeout, and when she was back she retired from the match, leaving everyone stunned.

Eventually, after the match, Garbine Muguruza explained that she felt a sharp pain in her left leg. She had the same issue in the first match, but she decided to keep on playing. However, this time she decided to call it a day to avoid causing any more damage.

“I was already feeling some pain in my first match. The switch of hard courts to clay was tough and in a very short amount of time. I started very well, and all of a sudden I felt a sharp pain in my leg, and it got worse. I didn’t want to continue without playing my best tennis. It didn’t make sense to me,” said Muguruza after the match.

Garbine is not scheduled to play any tournament in the next two weeks. She will be back to competition in Madrid. The tournament will start on the 26th of April. She is expected to be fully fit by that date.
