Bianca Andreescu will play her opening match at the Miami Open on Friday against the qualifier and world no.105 Tereza Martincova. The Canadian champion is eager to have a good run in South Florida, even if she has the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Naomi Osaka in her part of the draw. Bianca may clash against Muguruza in the 4th round, while she might face Naomi Osaka in the semifinal.
Overcoming rust and injury concerns
In 2019 Bianca demonstrated that if she is fit, she can beat absolutely everyone. The Canadian ace won the Rogers Cup and the US Open back to back, showing off incredible self-confidence alongside fantastic tennis.
However, she got lost on the way as she kept on struggling with injuries. Last year she was ready to come back on the occasion of the Miami Open before the pandemic halted the tours. Then she had some personal problems and a foot injury that prevented her from getting back to competitions in 2020.
Bianca was hoping to stage a strong comeback in 2021 on the occasion of the Australian summer, but she was struggling to shrug off the rust and she crashed out in the 2nd round of the Australian Open. Eventually, Andreescu competed in a WTA event in Melbourne soon after losing in the slam, but she couldn’t go beyond the semifinal.
Bianca decided to skip the Middle East swing to fine-tune her preparation with the aim of having a good Miami Open. She wasn’t lucky in the draw with Garbine Muguruza and Naomi Osaka on her way, but at least she can test her condition.
