Jannik Sinner had a rather unpleasant experience in Montpellier, where he lost in the 1st round to Aljaz Bedene 3-6 6-2 7-6(3). The upcoming Italian didn’t play at his usual level and on top of it, he looked in trouble with an issue to his lower back.
After the match, Jannik broke the good news that the issue with his back wasn’t serious.
“The back pain did not affect at all, it is 100% my fault and my game. When we challenged each other in Melbourne, I was much more aggressive; today, I made a mess. After the first set, I went on without an idea, or rather I had one, but it was wrong,” said Jannik.
I have to learn from this defeat; my idea of the game today was wrong. I am speechless and cannot tell you exactly why I lost today. In the next few days, we will talk to my coach and I will try to understand exactly where I went wrong.”
UPDATE
Unfortunately, both Jannik Sinner and Rafael Nadal had to withdraw from Rotterdam.
