Naomi Osaka has just conquered her 2nd Australian Open and 4th career slam. The Japanese champion displayed incredible solid tennis and she is widely considered more and more the face of WTA tennis and the player to beat.
Rankings
Naomi holds 2 slams right now and for some weird reasons, she is ranked only no.2 in the world after Ashleigh Barty that holds only 1 minor title. The Australian in the last year and a half won just 2 minor titles: one in Adelaide and the other one in Melbourne (the Yarra Classic). See titles.
The reason for this discrepancy is that the WTA decided to protect the rankings because of the pandemic, which made sense until a certain point.
Serena Williams
The American legend didn’t manage to win the Australian Open to instead lose in the semifinal to Naomi Osaka. After her run, she is back in the top10 to be ranked no.7
