Novak Djokovic won his 9th Australian Open on Sunday after showing amazing form. The Serbian champion outclassed Daniil Medvedev in the final to concede just 9 games to his opponents (7-5 6-2 6-2).
The following ceremony was particularly gracious. Daniil wanted to share how nice Novak was with him when they trained together in Monte Carlo and Daniil was not even in the top 500. The Russian ace wanted to stress the fact that even if Novak is a living legend, he has never lost his humility.
“Just to tell you a small story, I first met Novak when I was 500 or 600 in the world,” Medvedev said on court after the match.
I thought OK, he’s not going to speak to me because he was world number one. I was really shy. He was talking to me like I was a friend.
He’s never changed – he’s always been a great sport and a great friend. He’s a great guy. Congrats to Novak. Nine Slams in Australia is amazing and this won’t be your last one.”
Novak Djokovic’s wife
Jelena, Djokovic’s wife, could not follow Novak in Australia because of the well-known restrictions. Therefore, she decided to stay in Europe with her children. She remained profoundly impressed after Daniil’s speech to thank him on Twitter.
“Your kind words were touching Danil. Thank you! Congratulations to your team and lovely supportive wife! Your winning streak was mind blowing!”
