Jamie Hampton upsets Radwanska in Eastbourne

What a result for Jamie!

Ranked 41 in the world and coming from the qualifications, the American had a really good match to upset Radwnaska in her opener. This result is even more remarkable if you take in account the fact that the Pole reached the Wimbledon final last year!

From Jamie

“I think that the grass suits my game much better than the clay,” said an elated Hampton ”Last year at Wimbledon was my first match , and everyone told me, ‘You’re going to have a ton of fun on grass.

Your game translates well. You’re going to be able to come forward and take balls out of the air.’ It turns out everyone was right.”

From Agnieszka

A much less excited Radwanska commented “I think playing her in the first match on the grass was tough, and the fact that she played three matches before helped her a little bit.

Of course, I was practicing here a couple of days, but I think matches are a little bit different than practice. I think I wasn’t maybe quite match ready yet.Now I can just hope things turn out like last year!

I lost first round here but still ended up playing great tennis at Wimbledon.”

Next vs. Hsieh

Jamie will play Hsieh from Taipei in the next round. Head to head is 2-1 for Hampton that has defeated the Taiwanese 6-2 6-3 last week in Birmingham still on grass.
