This 2021 seems to go from bad to worse for Dayana Yastremska. The upcoming Ukrainian was suspended from tennis on the 7th of January after she was found positive for doping. Dayana was sure to have the clearance to be back to play soon as she maintains that the result of the analysis is the result of contamination.
The world no.29 decided to fly anyway to Australia from the Middle East and endure the “famous” quarantine hoping for the ban to be lifted.
However, things didn’t go so well and Dayana couldn’t have her ban lifted after she appealed to the ITF and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Dayana asked for an expedited appeal arbitration procedure to try to get the ban lifted on time for her to play the Australian Open. This is the official press release.
“Lausanne. J February 2021 – The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has issued its decision in the expedited appeal arbitration procedure between the Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremska and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in relation to the decision taken by the ITF Independent Tribunal on 22 January 2021 (the Challenged Decision) in which the application made by Dayana Yastremska to lift a provisional suspension imposed on her following a positive doping control was rejected.
The CAS has dismissed the appeal. Accordingly, the provisional suspension imposed on Dayana Yastremska in the Challenged Decision remains in force until a final decision is rendered by the ITF instances with regard to this matter (which may be followed by a new appeal at CAS).
A urine sample provided by Ms Yastremska on 24 November 2020 was found to contain a metabolite of mesterolone, a banned substance on the WADA Prohibited List. Following the analysis of the B Sample, which confirmed the finding for the A Sample. Ms Yastremska was provisionally suspended by the ITF with effect as from 7 January 2021. On 16 January 2021. Ms Yastremska applied to lift the provisional suspension but the Chair of the ITF Independent Tribunal rejected the application and maintained the provisional suspension, a decision which is now confirmed by CAS.”
